FINALLY…in new jekyll documentation found more elegant the correct solution for including an image or referring to a previous post so can stop using the root workaround
For example, this brings up the correct image: 
For working with pandoc citations cloned the entire citation-styles-language github repository into /usr/share/pandoc-1.10.1/data. To retain ability to fetch updates from git for CSL styles, symbolic link to the csl files I need from the data directory, thus making styles available for pandoc citation rendering.
